School trip transport across Europe
Taking a class abroad is a big responsibility, and the transport should be the part you worry about least. We book licensed partner operators who know the rules for carrying young passengers around Europe.
Seat belts, and making sure pupils wear them
On buses and coaches in the M2 and M3 categories, belts must be worn wherever a seat has one, and passengers have to be told so, for example by pictograms at the seats. A quick reminder from staff at every departure goes a long way, especially on the drive back after a long day of sightseeing when everyone wants to sleep.
For a single class, a minibus with 16-19 seats is often enough. A whole year group usually fits a 49-57 seat coach with the suitcases stowed underneath, which also keeps the aisle clear.

Crossing a border: journey forms and Community licences
International coach trips inside the EU count as occasional services and travel with a journey form carried in the vehicle, and the operator needs a Community licence to do international coach work. When we choose an operator for a cross-border school trip, these are basics we expect to see. If you plan a local excursion while abroad, tell us early so it can be arranged properly rather than added on the day.
Where school groups can get closer to the sights
A few cities make room for young travellers. In Rome, the ZTL BUS C zone covering the historic centre is closed to tourist buses, but school trips are one of the listed exceptions. In Amsterdam, a coach heavier than 7.5 tonnes needs an exemption to drive inside the S100 ring, and parties of under-12s are among the groups that can obtain one.
These exceptions still need permits and planning, so share your itinerary early and the operator can apply for what is required. Elsewhere, expect some walking from coach stops, and build it into the timetable so nobody feels rushed.
