Vienna is a delight for groups: palaces, concerts, coffee houses and wine taverns. It also keeps coaches out of its old centre, so knowing the set-down points on the Ring makes every day run more smoothly.

Why coaches stop on the Ring, not at St. Stephen's

Since 1 May 2014, driving a coach into the Innere Stadt, Vienna's 1st district, has not been allowed. St. Stephen's Cathedral and the old town are reached on foot from card-free set-down points ringing it, among them Börseplatz, Votivkirche, Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz, Burgring and Schwedenplatz. The majority operate every day from 08:00 to 20:00, so the return from an evening concert may call for a different pickup plan.

Palaces and museums with their own coach arrangements

For Schönbrunn, 48 coach spaces wait in the bus parking at number 50 Schönbrunner Schloßstraße. The Belvedere has its own designated set-down point, and so do the Hundertwasserhaus and Kunsthaus Wien, while the Burgring stop sits close to the Hofburg and Heldenplatz. As a rule bus parking spaces cannot be reserved, which is why the driver may drop you off and wait somewhere else.

Heuriger evenings and airport arrivals

For an evening at the Grinzing wine taverns, the set-down point there runs 24 hours, as does Westbahnhof, which makes a late return straightforward. From the centre to Vienna International Airport is roughly 18 km, or 25 to 45 minutes. Every passenger leaves through one arrivals hall and one of two sliding doors, so gathering a group is simple. Some travellers fly into Bratislava instead, about 80 km away.

Advent, the Wachau and further afield

Rathausplatz hosts the Christmas market from 13 November until 26 December 2026, and each year, in late October, an Advent coach plan comes out from the city covering the Saturdays leading up to Christmas. Day trips reach the Wachau Valley and Melk Abbey, about 90 km away, or Budapest, around 245 km and two and a half to three hours. Bratislava, roughly 80 km off, is near enough for an afternoon across the border.

Questions

Can a minibus take us to our hotel in the 1st district?

Coaches may not drive in the Innere Stadt. If your hotel is there, ask about an eight-seat van for the arrival, or plan to walk from the nearest Ring set-down point.

Is Salzburg possible as a day trip?

It is about 300 km, three to three and a half hours each way, which makes a very long day under driving-time limits. An overnight stay is usually kinder to everyone.

Can we reserve coach parking at Schönbrunn?

Bus parking in Vienna generally cannot be reserved. Schönbrunn's 48 coach spaces at Schönbrunner Schloßstraße 50 are used as they come free.
