Getting up to Buda Castle under a BABU permit

Coaches need a permit to enter the Budavár protected zone, and the BABU system is the only way to get one. The permit comes with an approved route, and the vehicle has to keep to it; wandering off route or staying too long brings surcharges. Inside the zone a coach may stop for 15 minutes, purely to set down or pick up.

For your group, fifteen minutes means everyone off promptly and a clear plan for meeting again. For set-down, use Ybl Miklós tér; for parking, the designated coach areas are Alsó Mészáros utca, Attila út and Palota út. Tell the operator how you would like to tackle the hill and the permit is planned around it.

Fisherman's Bastion, Parliament and the Pest side

Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church share the Castle District, so one permitted drop covers both. Across the river, Parliament's guided tours, St Stephen's Basilica and Heroes' Square with City Park are all on the Pest side, where a minibus links them easily in a morning. Evening Danube cruises glide past Parliament and the castle, and a pick-up after the boat is a kindness to a tired group.

From Ferenc Liszt Airport into the city

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport lies about 20 km from the centre, usually 30-50 minutes. Schengen flights use Terminal 2A and the others 2B. Tourist buses pick passengers up at the airport Bus Terminal, a minute or two's walk from the terminals, where short stays are permitted, while a separate bus car park takes the longer waits. Districts V, VI and VII are where most groups choose to stay.

Szentendre, Esztergom and Lake Balaton

Szentendre is 30-45 minutes away and makes a gentle half day. Esztergom takes around an hour, Balatonfüred on Lake Balaton 1.5-2 hours, and Vienna 2.5-3 hours, which also works as a one-way transfer for groups moving on.

Can the minibus wait for us at Buda Castle?

Not inside the protected zone. Stops there are capped at 15 minutes, only to set down or pick up, so the vehicle leaves and comes back, or parks at a designated coach area.

Who applies for the BABU permit?

The operator, through the BABU system, planning the approved route around your timings. You just say when you want to arrive and leave.

Can we travel on to Vienna by private transfer?

Yes. It is about 245 km, around 2.5-3 hours, and a transfer lets you stop along the way rather than wrestle luggage onto a train.

Which venues host big conferences?

HUNGEXPO in the 10th district holds the main trade fairs, and the Budapest Congress Center is in Buda. Hotel-to-venue shuttles to either are simple to quote.
