What the Florence contrassegno means for your group

For tourist coaches, Florence treats its entire built-up area as a restricted zone, around the clock. Every coach needs a contrassegno, bought online in advance and shown in the windscreen, and cameras have been enforcing this since 1 July 2025. Operators face tighter rules too: from 15 November 2025, one parking fine is enough to block the company from buying permits for seven days, covering every vehicle it runs.

Ask whether your minibus falls under the same scheme. Either way, the pass is the operator's job, not yours.

Permitted stops, coach parks and the walk in

Coaches may only set down at named stops: Piazzale Michelangelo, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Largo Vincenzo Giudice, and Savonarola, which is for drop-off only. Parking is at Viale XI Agosto (the T2 Guidoni site, open day and night), Piazzale Galileo, via Palazzeschi and Campioni del 56. In practice your group steps off, the vehicle leaves to park, and you meet it again at an agreed stop. Piazzale Michelangelo allows twenty minutes, which is plenty for the view and a group photo but not for stragglers.

Landing at Peretola or at Pisa

Peretola, Florence's airport, is only about 5 km out, normally 15-25 minutes by road. Its single terminal has arrivals on the ground floor, and yellow-striped coach bays sit at the airport bus station. Many international groups fly into Pisa instead, about 85 km away, and that is where a private transfer really earns its place: a driver already waiting beats changing trains with a pile of suitcases.

Chianti, Siena and San Gimignano with a driver

The countryside is where a minibus with driver earns its keep. Greve in Chianti is roughly 40-50 minutes away, San Gimignano about an hour, and Siena, Lucca and Pisa each around 1-1.25 hours. Two of these make a satisfying day if you set off early and leave room for a long lunch.

Questions

Can the minibus drop us at our hotel near the Duomo?

Usually not at the door. Vehicles are held to the permitted stops, so the operator picks the closest one and you walk the last stretch. Luggage that wheels well over stone paving helps.

Is the coach park by the Stadio Artemio Franchi open on match days?

No, it closes on event days. If your group is going to see Fiorentina, allow extra time and expect a longer walk from wherever the vehicle is allowed to stop.

Can a Pisa airport transfer include a stop in Pisa itself?

Yes. It turns a transfer into the first afternoon of the trip; mention it when you ask for a price so the time is built in.
