The ZTL BUS pass, and what happens without one

Any tourist coach driving into the ZTL BUS area must carry a pass from AVM, the city's transport company. Without one, a vehicle is limited to the Mestre bypass and the road linking the airport. Once inside the zone, it may stop only in dedicated car parks and at authorised boarding areas.

Late arrivals are covered too. Staff are at the check-in points only from 06:00 until 20:15, so a pass needed outside that window must be purchased online. That is exactly the kind of detail to leave with the operator, who arranges it before the day.

Tronchetto, the People Mover and Piazzale Roma

Tronchetto or Piazzale Roma is where the road runs out for most groups. At Tronchetto a coach can park for an hour and no longer, and the People Mover carries you on to Piazzale Roma. Use that hour to unload and say goodbye rather than to wait out a late check-out.

From Piazzale Roma you carry on by water bus, water taxi or on foot. With heavy bags or older travellers, sorting help for the far side makes more difference to the day than anything that happens on the road.

Marco Polo, Treviso and a base in Mestre

From Venice Marco Polo Airport to Piazzale Roma is about 13 km, normally 20-30 minutes. Commercial coaches wait on the north side of the terminal in the PBus area, and inside the airport's controlled traffic zone, where stops are normally capped at ten minutes, tourist buses are exempt. Treviso Airport lies about 40 km off. Plenty of groups stay in Mestre on the mainland, which keeps road transfers simple, though the ZTL BUS rules still decide where a vehicle may stop.

Padua, Verona and the Dolomites by minibus

Venice also works as a base for day trips. Padua and Treviso are each about 40 km away, Verona around 1.5-2 hours, and Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomites about 2-2.5 hours. A minibus with driver turns these into relaxed days rather than timetable puzzles.

Questions

Can the driver take us to St Mark's Square?

No road vehicle can. The closest you get is Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, then the water bus or a walk. Allow for that crossing when you book a first-evening dinner.

How long can a coach wait at Tronchetto?

One hour at most. For longer gaps the vehicle parks elsewhere and returns, so agree a meeting time rather than asking the driver to stay put.

We land after 21:00. Is the pass a problem?

No. The staffed check-in points close at 20:15, but the pass can be bought online outside those hours, and the operator sorts it in advance.

Where does the vehicle wait at Marco Polo?

Coaches use the PBus area north of the terminal; chauffeur cars load inside the airport car parks. The operator sends directions with your booking.
